La glutammina è un aminoacido essenziale, è il più abbondante del corpo umano. La glutammina è ampiamente presente sia in prodotti di origine animale, come le carni, il pesce, le uova ed i prodotti caseari, sia in prodotti vegetali.
E’ molto importante per l’organismo, interviene nel ciclo dell’urea, nel trasporto dei gruppi amminici, nella sintesi proteica e di molecole come il glutatione e la glucosammina, nel mantenimento della funzionalità del sistema immunitario.
A livello sportivo interviene anche nell’aumento di massa muscolare, nel recupero dopo uno sforzo intenso, nello stimolo di GH. Inoltre funge da disintossicante a livello epatico e renale. Aiuta a mantenere lucidità mentale e prontezza di riflessi, migliorando la concentrazione. Questo aminoacido attenua gli sbalzi glicemici indotti dall’insulina e per questo attenua la sensazione di fame. La glutammina viene convertita direttamente in glucosio senza innalzare l’insulina. Sappiamo che elevati livelli di insulina inibiscono la lipolisi e favoriscono l’accumulo di grasso.
La glutammina è anche il precursore del GABA, infatti i pazienti che presentano disturbi delle funzioni cerebrali sono carenti di acido glutammico. La glutammina stimola quindi il GABA che è un neurotrasmettitore dagli effetti rilassanti e antidepressivi.
In soggetti sani 3-5 grammi al giorno sono una ottima integrazione, eventualmente insieme all’arginina. Purtroppo il 50% della glutammina introdotta oralmente non raggiunge il sangue perchè degradata nell’intestino. Per questo motivo si deve preferire quella “peptide” più resistente in ambiente acquoso. Alcuni studi suggeriscono che la glutammina possa aiutare la guarigione di ossa, tendini e legamenti durante periodi di infortuni prolungati.
Si suggerisce l’assunzione nel pre work-out, assieme a dei carboidrati, per ottimizzare la performance e ridurre i danni ossidativi indotti dall’esercizio fisico intenso.
