Il BMI è un parametro utilizzato per ottenere una valutazione generale di un soggetto. Mette in relazione il peso e l’altezza con una formula matematica molto semplice. Si divide semplicemente il peso del soggetto con l’altezza in metri, al quadrato.
Ad esempio io sono alto 1,78 m e peso 76 kg. Il calcolo da fare è il seguente: 76/1,78 al quadrato (1,78×1,78=3,1684). Quindi 76 / 3,1684 = 23,99.
Vi riporto il significato del BMI per classificare il soggetto in base al risultato che esce, avremo delle sorprese.
<16,5 SOTTOPESO GRAVE
16-18,5 SOTTOPESO
18,5-24,5 NORMOPESO
25-30 SOVRAPPESO
30-35 OBESITA’ LIEVE I
35-40 OBESITA’ II
>40 OBESITA’ GRAVE III

Il BMI è un parametro veritiero?
Il mio risultato mi colloca in “normopeso”, ed è giusto ma voglio riflettere con voi un attimo. Nei periodi in cui metto qualche kg di muscolo arrivo anche ad 80kg, con una percentuale di massa grassa intorno al 10%. Giuro che è massa muscolare non è grasso. Rifacendo il calcolo in base agli 80 kg scopro di essere in sovrappeso, perchè il risultato che esce fuori è 25,25.
Ecco, va bene calcolare il BMI ma bisogna saper contestualizzare. Può essere un indice approssimativo ma poi quello che conta è la percentuale di massa grassa. Posso essere 85 kg di muscoli ed essere più sano di quello che, a pari altezza, pesa 15 kg in meno. Magari quello più leggero ha una percentuale di massa grassa superiore alla mia. Solitamente il BMI ci da un’indicazione corretta, perchè sono pochi i soggetti con una massa muscolare importante con massa grassa bassa, però è giusto saper contestualizzare e non fossilizzarsi su questo indice.
La plicometria è un parametro sicuramente più veritiero, oltre a darci anche il BMI, ci da un’indicazione della massa grassa.
