L’HMB, o meglio, l’Idrossi-metil-Butirrato è un prodotto metabolico sintetizzato dall’organismo a partire dalla Leucina, che è un aminoacido essenziale. La leucina ha funzioni anti cataboliche e, come detto, a partire da questo aminoacido si arriva all’HMB (idrossi-metil-butirrato). Per ottenere 3 grammi di HMB servirebbero 60 grammi di Leucina, cosa impensabile in natura perché l’organismo ne produce dai 200 ai 400 mg al giorno.
L’integrazione di HMB è sempre più comune, grazie alle sue proprietà anaboliche, lipolitiche ed anticataboliche, con riduzione dei DOMS. Sono in corso ancora molti studi che riguardano un supplemento e un’integrazione di HMB, molti studi sono ancora contrastanti. Altri studi dimostrano come in soggetti in età avanzata gli effetti sono positivi, mentre in soggetti sani ci sono ancora dubbi. Altri ancora suggerirebbero un possibile effetto positivo sul sistema immunitario e sulla guarigione delle ferite. Viene preso dagli sportivi nel tentativo di recuperare prima dagli infortuni, come ad esempio strappi o stiramenti.
E’ suggerita una dose di 3 grammi al giorno. Dosi maggiori non portano alcun beneficio.
